The Phonetic Alphabet
Ensuring accurate communication sometimes requires that a word if spelt. Some letters sound similar and therefore words are used to represent individual letters, e.g. 'Alpha' represents the letter 'A'.
An international set of recognised words is used to reduce misunderstanding. This is called the International Phonetic Alphabet and is listed below.
A Alpha
B Beta
C Charlie
D Delta
E Echo
F Foxtrot
G Golf
H Hotel
I India
J Juliet
K Kilo
L Lima
M Mike
N November
O Oscar
P Papa
Q Quebec
R Romeo
S Sierra
T Tango
U Uniform
V Victor
W Whiskey
X X-ray
Y Yankee
Z Zulu
It is good practice to warn the distant receiver that you are about to spell something, e.g. "I am located in Taunton, I spell Tango, Alpha, Uniform, November, Tango, Oscar, November"
Leader's notes and a reference sheet are available for you to use which can be downloaded using the link below.
